Real Madrid star Marcelo agrees contract extension to remain with European champions until 2022

Real Madrid defender Marcelo has agreed a contract extension that will potentially see the long-serving Brazilian complete 16 years at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Macelo, 29, has agreed terms on a new five-year deal with the European champions, an extension until the end of the 2021-22 season.

The Brazilian international joined Los Blancos from Fluminese in 2006. He has gone on to make 406 appearances for the club, scoring 28 goals.

Marcelo has won the Champions League three times, La Liga four times and the Copa del Rey and Fifa Club World Cup twice.

He will appear before media at 1pm on Thursday to put pen-to-paper.

Marcelo now faces a two-match ban

News of his new deal comes on the same day he received a two-match ban for kicking out at an opponent during Madrid’s 1-1 draw with Levante on Saturday.

He was sent off after kicking out at Jefferson Lerma, with the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) later confirming his suspension.

He will miss the matches against Real Sociedad and Real Betis.
